“Mysterious White Blobs Wash Ashore in Newfoundland—What Are They?”

Mysterious white blobs

Mysterious white blobs have recently been appearing on the beaches of Newfoundland, raising concerns among locals and prompting an investigation by Canadian officials. Described by one resident as having a doughy texture with an odor similar to vegetable oil, the substance first began to surface in early September.

Photos of the blobs shared online have sparked numerous theories, including possibilities like fungus, palm oil, or even whale-derived ambergris. However, Environment and Climate Change Canada has confirmed that the substance is not a petroleum product or biofuel, while Fisheries and Oceans Canada has ruled out biological material, such as sea sponges.

Local environmentalist Stan Tobin, who has frequently encountered these blobs along the shores of Placentia Bay, describes them as varying in size but generally around 6 inches in diameter. Despite reporting the unusual find to the Canadian Coast Guard, Tobin believes the true origin remains unknown.
